Michael J. Bernardo, M.D.
Drs. Mike and Darly Bernardo came to Newberry in 1992. They have four children.
Dr. Mike grew up in upstate New York as the oldest of five children. He attended Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and graduated with the Bachelor of Science Degree with Distinction in 1978. While at Cornell he lettered in football and lacrosse.
From 1978-85 he did research in medical entomology and parasitology at Cornell, and received the Master of Science Degree.
His work frequently took him to Africa and Central America, where a love for Tropical Medicine took root that continues to this day.
In 1985, he began at Cornell Medical College, earning his M.D. in 1989. He was awarded the Anthony S. Werner Prize for excellence in the Study of Infectious Diseases, and received the Good Physician Award, given to the student annually who "best exemplifies the intangible qualities of the Good Physician."
From 1989-92 Dr. Bernardo was part of the Family Medicine Residency at the University of Virginia. He was Chief Resident during his final year. It was during this time that he met fellow family medicine resident, Darly Moore - they were married in 1991.
Dr. Bernardo is board certified in Family Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the Christian Medical and Dental Association. He is a member of the Newberry County Medical Society, and served as president in 1998. He was Chief of Staff at Newberry County Memorial Hospital in 1997, and is currently Chief of Staff in 2005. In 2004, he was awarded the South Carolina Family Physician's Public Health Award.
